Adult reading clubs.
The two (2) adult reading clubs, which have been operating since 2009, are very popular, as their members show keen interest and eagerly await the monthly meetings.
The meetings of the two Adult Reading Clubs are held on a regular basis, once a month, at the Municipal Library’s Reading Room, where members discuss a book that they have all agreed to read.
In July 2019, the Head of Municipal Libraries, Vivi Choudalaki, and members of the First Reading Club of the Municipal Library of Chania visited the Municipality of Syros with the aim of establishing cooperation between their municipal libraries.
Meetings of the members of the First Club have also been held in the mountains. In the White Mountains!!! At 1,680 meters, at the Kallergi refuge! In an atmosphere of enthusiasm, we read poems by Greek and foreign writers, Kiki Dimoula, Katerina Angelaki-Rook, Tasos Leivaditis, and others.
We also visited the Omalos Information Center of the Forestry Department. The director, Ms. Polymnia Sklavaki, and the head of the Forest Protection and Management Department, Mr. Ioannis Fotakis, gave us a warm welcome. In an atmosphere of enthusiasm, we read and analyzed “The Journey of Sfakia” by the renowned Chania poet and writer Manousakis Giorgis. We also read poems and hymns to nature by Greek and foreign writers, and ended with… mantinades!
The Municipal Library of Chania, as part of its Reading Program and the Library’s First Adult Reading Club visited the Fourfouras Elementary School, « The School of Nature and Colors», a school with a difference. Surrounded by nature and colors. Happy teachers and children welcomed us, showed us around bright and colorful classrooms, the school grounds, prepared breakfast for us and gratefully accepted the gifts offered by the Municipal Library and the members of the Club. This was followed by a reading program for both younger and older children.
We highly recommend the books read by the Club members to all book lovers.
