The collection of the Municipal Library of Chania includes old printed books that are important for the history of printing, which contributed to the preservation of texts, the fight against ignorance, the dissemination of knowledge and the progress of civilization.
Greek printing in Italy owes much to the Venetian Aldo Manuzio, who was considered the greatest printer in Italy. A scholar and admirer of the Greek spirit, he printed and preserved masterpieces of Greek classical literature using the most authentic manuscripts.
One of these belongs to our collection, the book “Omnia Platonis Opera” from 1513. There are many other old prints, as well as a large number of old books, most of which were donated to the Library.
