The Municipal Library of Chania, applying new technologies, has launched a digital library and digitized part of its material, which is available to the public. Visitors can search for books, magazines, archives, photographs and maps without physically being present at the library.

The digitization and documentation of the material includes books, court records, documents, drawings, maps and photographs from the personal library of Eleftherios Venizelos, which is part of the Municipal Library of Chania. It also includes the proceedings of the Municipal Council from 1898 to 1936.

The material was made available and processed in collaboration with the Eleftherios K. Venizelos National Foundation as part of the project entitled: “Digital Routes in Crete of Eleftherios Venizelos”, which was included in the OP “Crete” 2014-2020 and co-financed by the European Union – European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and national resources.

The aim of the project is to highlight the history and promote tourism at five locations that were important in the life of Eleftherios Venizelos in Chania: the Eleftherios Venizelos House-Museum in Halepa, his birthplace in Mournies, the Museum – Headquarters of the Revolution in Theriso, the Venizelos Tombs in Akrotiri and the Municipal Library of Chania. The five sites form a unified digital network of cultural routes for modern Greek and European history, centred on Eleftherios Venizelos.
