Local Collection
The Municipal Library of Chania has a significant collection of material of local interest.
The collection of sources on local history and cultural heritage is essential to a community and is one of the most basic functions of a municipal library. Photographs, newspapers, magazines, archives, posters, brochures, books, and other material of local interest are among the priorities of our library’s collection. These collections are a source of information for researchers and readers seeking historical, folkloric and all kinds of material related to Chania and Crete in general. This is an important task, as history is written not only about the major events and milestones of countries and continents, but also about the people of local communities, whose lives should also be highlighted in historiography. Libraries collect, preserve, document and classify all these sources that will preserve the memories of the place and help readers reflect on their past, better analyze their present and move forward into the future without overlooking or forgetting.
Our library prioritizes the collection of such material, thus contributing to the promotion of local characteristics and the establishment of the historiography of our place and has contributed to the preservation and dissemination of this valuable material.
