Operating Regulations
The Municipal Library of Chania, one of the largest and most highly regarded provincial libraries in Greece, was founded in 1953 and is open to all residents. In order to better serve children and teenagers, the Municipality of Chania created the Children’s and Teenagers’ Library in the Municipal Garden in 1987.
Aims and objectives of the Municipal Library of Chania
The aims and objectives of the Municipal Library are to promote the spread of knowledge, education and culture without political, religious, racial, or other discrimination and to enable access to all kinds of information.
To achieve its goals, the Municipal Library of Chania:
– acts as a local information center, providing its users with access to all kinds of knowledge and information,
– promotes literacy and all kinds of related educational and cultural activities,
– acts in every direction to fulfill its mission.
The implementation of these objectives, which are in line with UNESCO’s declaration on libraries, constitute the central axis on which the Internal Regulations of the Municipal Library of Chania are based and create its unified operating framework.
The Municipal Library of Chania aims to:
– Create and strengthen visibility.
– Provide experiences for personal and creative development.
– Develop the imagination and creativity of young people.
– Promote awareness of cultural heritage, scientific achievements and innovations.
– Ensure citizens have access to all kinds of information related to the local community and the history of the city.
– Strengthen efforts to acquire skills directly related to the use of computers and information technology.
The Municipal Library of Chania is active in the following ways:
– making printed material available to the public.
– making audiovisual material available to the public.
– adjusting its opening hours according to the needs of the citizens of the Municipality of Chania.
To achieve these goals, the Municipal Library is taking the following actions:
– ensuring the acquisition, processing, distribution, maintenance and promotion of the material,
– continuously researches the needs of library users in collaboration with them and various other bodies.
– It monitors and incorporates developments in library science and information science, as well as technological developments that will facilitate its work and contribute to the development of new services.
– It adopts national and international standards,
– collects and compiles special collections (folklore, archival, photographic and other material) and undertakes the organization, management and distribution of local information sources.
– collaborates with other libraries and institutions.
