2020: REVIEW – STATISTICAL DATA and new Services of the Municipal Library & Children’s – Teenagers’ Libraries

During this difficult year, due to the emergency measures taken to protect public health, our municipal libraries sent an optimistic message to young and old alike, so that they would not be deprived of reading and the joy of reading, offering new services and serving their public.

The services offered by our municipal libraries under the new conditions of the pandemic are:
– Loans by order
– Home loans
– Storytelling program – reading children’s books & activities for children.
– Remote reading programs – via Webex – with primary school students.

Taking stock of the year, we present the following statistics, noting that in-person services at the libraries were available until March 12, 2020 – after which they closed – and from then until the end of the year, the public used the new services offered by our libraries.

Specifically, in 2020, at the Libraries of the Municipality of Chania
– 816 new members were registered,
– the total number of users/readers who used them reached 19.304
– a total of 32.768 books and 261 magazines & audiovisual material (CDs-DVDs) were borrowed.
– a total of 1.826 new monographs were acquired
– the total number of books in the collection exceeded one hundred thousand, 118.171
– 51 school classes visited our municipality’s libraries and 1.849 students (until March 12, 2020, when they closed) and 43 reading programs were held.

The members of the΄First Reading Club f the Municipal Library of Chania met with all precautions in place nine (9) times in 2020 and read and discussed 9 books, while the Second Reading Club met three 3 times and read 3 books.

The Mobile Library Municipal of Chania did not operate in 2020.

2019: A great year for the Municipal Libraries of Chania

Our municipal libraries in numbers:

Specifically, in 2019, 1.542 new members registered with the Chania Municipal Libraries, while the total number of users/readers who used them reached 45.352.

A total of 54.778 books and 413 magazines and audiovisual material (CDs and DVDs) were borrowed.

A total of 3.431 new volumes were acquired, bringing the total number of books in the collection to 166.284.

The number of events held last year is also impressive, with a total of 184 seminars.

It should also be noted that 166 school classes visited the municipal libraries, with a total of 5.829 students.

The Mobile Library made 37 visits to schools and lent 1.141 books to students.

The two (2) Adult Reading Club met 23 times in 2019
and read and discussed a large number of books.

2018: A great year for the Municipal Libraries of Chania

The libraries of the Municipality of Chania, with their library organization, renovation of premises, various cultural activities, events for children and adults, seminars, reading clubs, collaborations with cultural organizations, institutions, libraries, schools, and so much more, have achieved significant results.

They aimed to increase visibility, boost visitor numbers and borrowing, encourage voluntary participation and contributions, and at the same time upgrade and develop the libraries themselves.

Our municipality’s libraries in numbers:

Specifically, in 2018, 1,651 new members registered at the libraries of the Municipality of Chania, while the total number of users/readers who used them reached 46,454.

A total of 55.556 books and 671 magazines and audiovisual material (CDs and DVDs) were borrowed.
A total of 2,639 new monographs were acquired, while the total number of books in the collection exceeded 100,000, reaching, 112.535.

The number of events held last year is also impressive, with a total of 182 seminars.

It should also be noted that 238 school classes visited the municipal libraries, with a total of 6.909 students.

The Mobile Library, with 71 visits to school units, lent 2328 books to students.

The two (2) Adult Reading Clubs met 22 times in 2018, during which a wide range of books were read and discussed.

2017: A Remarkable Year for the Municipal Libraries of Chania

The Libraries of the Municipality of Chania, through their professional library organization, the renovation of their spaces, a wide range of cultural activities, events for children and adults, seminars, reading clubs, and collaborations with cultural institutions, foundations, schools, and many more initiatives, achieved significant results.

Their efforts focused on promoting reading, increasing visitor numbers and loans, encouraging voluntary participation and contribution, while also enhancing and developing the Libraries themselves.

Specifically, in 2017, 1.542 new members registered at the Municipal Libraries of Chania, while the total number of users and readers reached 36.563.

A total of 47.852 books and 775 magazines and audiovisual materials (CDs and DVDs) were borrowed.

TThe total number of newly acquired monograph volumes amounted to 1.821, bringing the overall book collection to 110,354 volumes

The number of events held last year is also impressive, reaching 150, including seminars

It is also worth noting that, 99 school classes visited the Municipal Libraries with a total of 6.158 students participating.

The Mobile Library, with 70 visits to school units, lent 2300 books to students.

The two (2) Adult Reading Clubs met 20 times in 2017, during which a wide range of books were read and discussed.

Statistical Data for the Year 2016

Specifically, in 2016, 1,222 new members registered at the Municipal Libraries, while the total number of users and readers reached 32,255.
A total of 41,379 books and 1,017 magazines and audiovisual materials (CDs and DVDs) were borrowed.

The total number of newly acquired monograph volumes amounted to 2,600, bringing the overall book collection to 108,660 volumes.

The number of events held during the previous year is also impressive, reaching 221, including seminars

It is also worth noting that 133 school classes visited the Municipal Libraries, with a total of 4,417 students participating.

The Mobile Library, with 74 visits to school units, lent 3.344 books to students.
The two (2) Adult Reading Clubs met 20 times in 2016, during which a wide range of books were read and discussed.
